What’s the good word?
I sure am glad it’s finally Saturday. Have you worked out yet today? Yeah, me neither. I’m keeping my baby girl this weekend while my wife is out of town and we are getting to spend some good quality father/daughter time together. . .and by that I mean pets heads are falling off. I’m hoping to crank out a post before she destroys my computer end enjoys every minute of it.
Today I want to talk a little about fitness and a little about nutrition. If you have read any of my last few posts, you know it hasn’t been a normal few weeks for us, and therefore my routine hasn’t been normal either. My workouts haven’t been as frequent and I haven’t been too concerned about what I am eating. The interesting this is that I’ve made progress nonetheless.
I mentioned last post that I have been stuck at a weight of 191-192 for a couple of months now. Well, no mas!
Somehow through all of this, I broke through that plateau and starting dropping lbs again. Heyo! When something like this happens, it gives you a new wave of motivation, and I needed it desperately.
Even though my workouts have been less frequent, they have been pretty intense and I think the fact that I have started cycling and swimming again contributed to my new weight loss. Sometimes your body gets in a ‘rut’ and you need to shake things up to get it going again. I got a nice 9 mile run in on Wednesday and have been logging some time on the indoor bike trainer as well.
I am now committed to doing a few triathlons this year, even though I don’t yet know which ones. I officially have a bike, a coach, and a training plan, so I figure I am in the deep end so to speak. Speaking of deep ends, this means I have to conquer the art of SWIMMING. This terrifies me.
I did a triathlon in the past and have started swimming again but all bets are off the minute you hit that water. Because of this, I start a “Winter Skills and Technique” swimming semester on Sunday! Basically, that is fancy speak for “teaching old kids how to swim correctly.” Every Sunday and Tuesday I will be getting some major swim instruction which is exactly what I need. For our first class on Sunday I had to get a few things, including these!
Between these babies, my goggles, and the spandex-ish swim “jammers” I have to wear, I am going to be one good looking dude. If I don’t end up being a swim jedi, I at least will have plenty of humility. I’m looking forward to it though because I need to feel as comfortable as I can in the water, especially when it comes time to hit the open water course in a triathlon.
I also started working on my annual training and race calendar, which I highly recommend everyone doing, even if you don’t race.
This calendar is dry-erase and allows me to see the entire year. I track my workouts, my races, and make notes about how my training is coming along. I’m anxious to see how long the wife lets it stay on the dining room table!
In terms of weight loss, I also think my eating habits have helped play a part. I mentioned that I haven’t really been worrying about what I’ve been eating, and this is true. Because of this though my diet has been very simple and clean. I’ve been eating quite a few veggie only means and drinking lots of juice. This was my snack last night. I’m not gonna lie. For a split second, I thought about ordering a pizza of all things. Then my logical self won over.
Pretty crazy for a Friday night huh? Oh how times have changed.
I did get a chance to make some homemade red pepper hummus and it was tha bomb.
Simple recipe of garbanzo beans, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, red peppers, and adobo sauce all blended up.
This is my favorite juice and I had it this morning for breakfast.
It has carrots, apples, and lemon. Yackum. I was able to try a new veggie this week. Have you ever had white asparagus, or as I call it, the caucasian delight?
I hadn’t either, and I won’t be again anytime soon. Not my favorite.
Anyway, progress is being made. I need to start really cranking out some new vegan recipes and try out some new stuff, but sometimes you have to prioritize. You know me. I could live on beans and greens forever!
Enjoy the weather while it lasts and get your lazy fat butt off the couch!! (just kidding, but really)
Sincerely,
