This week its all about survival. Survival from the’ battle of the bulge’ so to speak. I love the holidays but I WILL NOT go home wearing hefty pants. . .at least that is my goal. Here is how I have fared during this week of winter indulgence.
I got a good run in to start the week off on Monday. Anytime I know that I’m going to be soft on my diet, I try to get in some really good workouts beforehand in sort of a ‘preemptive strike’ against captain big gut. If nothing else, it helps me clear my head so that I can survive all the wonderful family time!
I was also surprised and excited to find out that my new Oakley Running Sunglasses came in. I am one of those guys who buys cheap junk and then complains when it doesn’t work like I needed it to. Luckily, a college buddy of mine tricked the medical community into letting him become an eye doctor so I can a nice little discount.. This is my serious secret service face. Look how cool I am!! Ha!! If being lame is cool, then I’m the coolest! At least I’ll be able to run comfortably. I’m hoping the rain here clears up so I can give ‘em a test drive.
I got a nice little run in on Wednesday as well. I’m still trying to slowly increase my speed. If I can get a few GOOD workouts in while I am in town, I will feel much better about how the week went when I go back home. Now to the food! Let’s call it like is. I’ve eaten too much. There have been a few too many morsels of Christmas delight which have somehow mysteriously made their way into my Santa belly. BUT, I have done MUCH better that in years past and really haven’t eaten as much as I thought I would.
Knock on wood. The week is still young!
Breakfast has been really easy. My parents have gotten very good at keeping a lot of fresh fruit and almond milk around for me. I have been trying to load up on nutrient in the morning. It makes my day better and at least I know I was perfect on one meal. This was a banana, strawberry, date, and almond milk smoothie. . .heaven in a glass.
One of my favorite restaurants in Memphis is Huey’s. Unfortunately, Huey’s is known for their burgers, and they are AMAZING. They do, though, have a veggie burger that I looked into and it is totally vegan, so I went with that. To be honest, it was junk. It was typical cookie cutter frozen food veggie burger that we all have come to know and loathe. So the food wasn’t my favorite, but I got to catch up with a good buddy of mine, talk about running some races together next year, and didn’t kill my insides. To keep with this whole “honesty” theme, I must say that I had some fries as well, and they were tha bomb.
For dinner last name, we met up with our friends Dalton Scottsdale and Nurse Veggie. There is a new vegan restaurant in Memphis called “Imagine Cafe” they have been telling us about so we decided to check it out. Everything on their menu is vegan, so it’s nice not to have to do a research project on the menu. Healthy options in Memphis aren’t as prevalent as in some larger cities so places like this are a gem. We were the only people in there, which makes me nervous as to how long they will be around.
I had the “Philly Cheesesteak” which was aweseome. I was so enthralled with my food that I forgot to take a picture. Fail. It came with sauteed spinach and was truly very good. Other entrees at our table were red beans, and rice, “Memphis Style BBQ,” and a nice looking veggie burger. Being that its Christmas and we were at a vegan restaurant, we all got a little dessert to share.
This was an eggnog cupcake that I devoured like an eagle consuming its prey. Man it was good and it didn’t last long!
My wife ordered a banana split which turned out to be the size of a mini horse, so we all got to partake. She hasn’t quite warmed up to the camera..
As you can see, I have done pretty good this week so far. I don’t want to have to spend several weeks making up for the bad choices I made during the holidays so I decided I am going to avoid as much of that mess as possible. I’ll still enjoy myself but the key is to use a little restraint (something I’m not very good at. My “go big or go home” attitude typically applies to both workouts AND eating).
Take it day by day this week, get out and do a little exercise, make a few good choices (or at least better choices) and before you know it January will be here and you won’t be at the water cooler with all the other employees whining about their gutbutt (yep, new word) and “resolving” to work it off in the new year.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. Enjoy the time you have with your family no matter how crazy they are. Life is short. I look forward to sharing more with you later on in the week.
